New Years Eve is the contrived holiday I dislike the least.
Like Christmas, from a historical perspective, celebrating January 1st as the first day of the new year is a relatively recently invention. Until 1751, in England (and all British dominions), the first day of the new year was March 25th.
Regardless of the arbitrary nature of the tradition of New Years (I think the spring equinox makes more sense) it's still a good time (may as well since everyone else is doing it too) to take stock of the past year, forgive past transgressions and make resolutions for the coming year.
I rarely make comments on current events... but as per the intent of my cartoon (and as we've seen on numerous occasions over the last year) you never really know what's around the corner.
So, that said, the one thing I always try to do is this:
I try to enjoy myself most of the time and make sure that those around me are having a good laugh too... while still accomplishing the things that need to be done efficiently and properly. Part of that is making fun of others, part of that is making light of myself too. Know when to laugh, but know when to keep the joke to yourself. If you're extremely offended, you're taking life far too seriously. If you're not offended at all, you're not taking it seriously enough.
The real key to having a good year (and having a good life) is trying to keep the balance in everything.
Try to leave the "party" better than you left it, and try to leave it having had a good time.
Happy New Year

ReplyDeleteoh that provides a great idea if being dragged to a party that you don't know many people. Going as the grim reaper and using that line on the unwary. would certainly contribute to a good time, at least for me.
Agreed - that would be hilarious. You'd need to have some film it secretly so it could be posted on YouTube later.
ReplyDeleteDo people still use the word "film"? "Video" also seems to be out of place now. A 14 year old I know, didn't know what a Walkman was. I'm starting to get scared.
Tape, Record, TiVo, all terms that have such old roots. What will take their place in the future is just one of the wonders we will get to see.
ReplyDeleteRecently an IT Security college student ask, "What is Netscape?". A couple years ago a Mechanical Engineering University student asked, "What is a drafting table" when being offered one for free.
